Branching Out: The Best Times to Trim Your Trees

ree

Is your yard looking a bit overgrown? Before you go out on a limb with your pruning shears, let's talk about the optimal times to trim your trees. Timing is tree-mendously important—not just for the health of your leafy friends, but also to prevent diseases like oak wilt from creeping in.

Oak Trees: Prune with Caution

Oak trees are particularly susceptible to oak wilt, a fatal disease spread by sap-feeding beetles attracted to fresh wounds. To keep your oaks healthy:

  • Safe Pruning Period: Late November through March. During these colder months, beetles are inactive, reducing the risk of infection.

  • High-Risk Period: April through July. Avoid pruning during this time to prevent attracting disease-carrying beetles.

  • If Pruning is Unavoidable During High-Risk Months: Immediately apply a water-based paint or wound sealer to any cuts to deter beetles.

Other Deciduous Trees: Timing Matters

For your non-oak deciduous trees:

  • Best Pruning Time: Late winter to early spring (February to early April). Pruning during dormancy promotes vigorous growth in the spring and minimizes disease risk.

  • Avoid Pruning: Late spring and summer. Pruning during active growth can stress the tree and make it more susceptible to pests and diseases.

Evergreens: A Different Approach

Evergreens have their own set of guidelines:

  • Spruce and Fir Trees: Prune in late winter while they're still dormant.

  • Pines: Best pruned in early June or July when new growth, known as "candles," has emerged but hasn't yet hardened.

General Pruning Tips:

  • Clean Cuts: Always use sharp, clean tools to make precise cuts, reducing the risk of disease.

  • Know Your Tree: Different species have unique needs. Research or consult with a professional about the specific requirements of your trees.

  • Safety First: For large trees or high branches, consider hiring a professional to ensure safety and proper technique.
